On Saturday, October 19th, the #OutNow movement was born, beginning with “five weeks of protest to launch, spread, and grow an unrelenting non-violent mass movement of protests that continue week after week to demand that the Trump/Pence Regime Must Go — NOW! From there, we will continue to grow and not stop until the Trump/Pence Regime has been removed from power.”
The day was full of informative, provocative, inspiring speeches, excerpted here.
Cornel West spoke at the opening rally in Union Square, and was part of leading the march to Trump Tower:
We live in an age of catastrophe. We got escalating nuclear catastrophe, ecological catastrophe, economic catastrophe with wealth inequality, we got a political catastrophe with a neofascist regime in the making.
This is about what kind of human being are you going to be at this particular moment when there are neofascists not just here but in other parts of the world? There is always a critical slice of folk who are full of deep love and courage and willingness to take a risk, that constitute a catalyst for the larger group, not just in this country but around the world.
Sharonne Salaam is the mother of Yusef Salaam, one of the exonerated Central Park 5 who, as teenagers, were virtually kidnapped by the NYPD and railroaded into false confessions in Central Park jogger case. At the time, Donald Trump took out a full page ad calling for these youth to be executed.
I want you to know one thing, they have already come for me. And next, they will be coming for you. Make sure you stand up now before someone knocks on your door or kills your child. Get rid of the leader of this crew, this gang that we have in the White House, the Trump/Pence regime and all of his soldiers. They are marching in tune, one behind the other. Stand up and be counted. Let us not go back to before slavery. Let’s not go back to the massacre of the Native Americans. Let’s move forward. We have come too far to go back. Step up your name. Step up your count. Step up your feet. If you can’t walk, grab a limb. If you have no shoes, drag a leg. But move forward. We are going on from here, we are not going back. Trump/Pence Must Go! Go! Go!
Andy Zee, co-initiator of refusefascism.org and spokesperson for Revolution Books, grounded the rally in why #OutNow is necessary to stop this American fascism.
Impeachment is a fight at the top of society. It requires you to see that there’s a good ending to this. That the interests of humanity are in here. Nancy Pelosi is impeaching only on the grounds of national security and emoluments. But she’s leaving the whole fascist agenda in tact, and if that happens, even if he is impeached in the House of Representatives, it will leave a legitimation of that agenda and reduce this to an election issue, one that they have told you already they want to make secondary to other issues. This is nothing but bribery to keep your eyes off the prize of what really has to be done right now.
We can’t just do this based on the people on top. It has to be a groundswell from below. That’s what you’re out here doing today. There’s a great deal of crisis, and people are increasingly raising their heads and opening their eyes, and they have to see a movement out there that starts with thousands today and tens of thousands in a few weeks, that grows to the point where we will not relent on this.
Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, drone footage of Trump Pence #OutNow spelled out on Santa Monica Beach went out over the Internet. Along their march from the beach to Santa Monica Pier, fascist thugs attacked the protesters, spraying bear repellant into their faces and sending several to the hospital, but others on the scene were compelled to act, stepping in between the marchers and their assailants. Fascism is a blatant form of dictatorship that rules by terror and violence. These street forces, some of which are organized and some which are not, are critical to neutralizing opposition and consolidating the fascist program. This physical assault on #OutNow protesters only strengthened their resolve, but this is serious. It’s precisely what Trump means when he says he longs for the days when protesters are carried out on stretchers, or invokes the holy trinity of “the military, police, and bikers for Trump.”
All this is just a glimpse of why it is necessary, and possible, to build a mass protest movement that will not be deterred or provoked, and will continue week after week, then day after day, until this fascist regime is driven from power. Go to refusefascism.org to sign up. Everyone has a role to play.
Now is the time to seize on the impeachment crisis erupting, taking history into our own hands and turning dread into a force for hope. We owe this to the children of the world.
